Surnames I'm researching. . . If you'd like to compare notes on any of these families, drop me a line!

  • Alles ...  Clara Alles (my 2nd great grandmother) was born in the Rhineland in 1844 and came to this country with her family while she was very young.  The family settled in New Albany, Indiana sometime before the Civil War. 
  • Binger ... Peter Binger (my 2nd great grandfather) was born in Germany (probably Alsace) about 1806.  He and his family settled in Carr township on Clark county, Indiana sometime before 1860.  Peter died there in 1862. 
  • Stickle .... Thompson Stickle  (my 3rd great grandfather) was born in eastern Ohio in 1818.  I believe his parents came from Virginia, and it appears that he was orphaned at a young age.  Thompson married Martha Jane Chapin in Coshocton county, Ohio in 1844.  In 1853 they purchased a farm in Eden township in northeastern Licking county.  Thompson and Martha raised a family of ten children on the farm, and present-day Stickle Road passes through the land that the family farmed.  Thompson died in 1884. 
  • Riley... William Riley (my 4th great grandfather) was born near New Castle, Pennsylvania about 1753.  In 1795 he married Hannah Long.  William and Hannah moved to central Ohio and settled in western Muskingum County where William died in 1837. 
  • Koerner ... Martin Koerner (my 2nd great grandfather) was born in Bavaria in about 1819.  He came to New York in 1846 and settled in Clark County, Indiana in 1847.  Martin and his father-in-law, Joseph Ehringer, helped build the first Catholic church at St. Joseph's Hill in 1853.  Marin died in 1895 and is buried in the cemetery of the church he helped establish. 
  • Weaver ...George Weaver (my 3rd great grandfather) was born in Hardy county, Virginia in about 1812.  He moved to Ohio before 1840 and settled in northern Licking county where he lived until his death in 1897.
  • Layman ... Abraham Layman (my 4th great grandfather) was born in Rockingham county, Virginia in about 1805.  He came to Ohio before 1850, settling first in Fairfield county.  He moved to Licking county in about 1856 and lived in Mary Ann township until his death in 1865.
  • Hickey ... William Hickey (my 4th great grandfather) was born in Frederick county, Virginia in about 1797.  He served briefly in the War of 1812 (in 1814), and moved to Ohio in 1815.  He took up residence in Mary Ann township in northeastern Licking county about 1820, and acquired significant land holdings in the area.  He lived in Mary Ann township until his death in 1890.
  • Hoffer . . .  Frank Hoffer (my 2nd great grandfather) was born in Baden in 1831 and worked for a while as a glass  blower before coming to the United States in 1851 where he took up carpentry.  He lived briefly in New York City, but moved to Indiana in 1854.   After settling in New Albany on the Ohio River he started a very successful wholesale business, dealing in liquor and livestock feed.  He died in New Albany in 1889. 
  • Plummer . . . Abraham Plummer (my 4th great grandfather) was born in either Pennsylvania or Maryland about 1788.  He settled in McKean Township in Licking county, Ohio before 1820.  He lived in Licking county for the remainder of his life and died there in
  • Fowler . . .  Hiram O. Fowler (my 3rd great grandfather) was born in Columbia county, Pennsylvania in 1826.  He worked for a time on the canals and moved to Ohio in 1857, settling in Newton township, Licking county.  He operated a mill and worked as a farmer, and died in Licking county in 1914. 
  • Robinson . . .  Stephen Robinson (my 5th great grandfather) was born in Hardy county, Virginia in 1868.  He married Sarah Oldaker (Oldacre?) in Hardy county in 1789.  In 1806 he purchased 300 acres of land in what is now Newton township, Licking county, Ohio from the speculator Louis Sullivant.  Stephen was one of the earliest settlers in the township, and died there in May, 1840.   
  • Seward . . . Enos Seward (my 6th great grandfather) was born in Granville, Massachusetts in 1735.  He married Sarah Gross in 1765 and served in the War for Independence, most probably in the militia.  The family moved to Huntington township in Luzerne county, Pennsylvania about 1793.  Enos operated a lathe and engaged in small-scale manufacture of wooden bowls and tools.  He died in Huntington township in 1820. 
  • Rauck . . . Andreas Rauck (my 3rd great grandfather) was born about 1801 in Hesse-Darmstadt. He married Elizabeth Wade and they came to the US in about 1846.  They settled in Clark county, Indiana where Andreas died in 1877.
  • Chapin . . . John Chapin (my 5th great grandfather) was born in Worcester county, Massachusetts in 1755.  He married Hannah Rockwood in 1775 and they settled in Luzerne county, Pennsylvania where they raised a large family.  John died in Luzerne county in 1839 and is buried in the Town Hill Cemetery.
